Basking in the sun is nice, good for your health and puts you in a good mood. However, alongside the benefits, sun rays can also cause harmful effects to skin, which can also be quite serious.
The harmful effects, in the short and long term, are due to UVA, UVB and even infrared (IR) rays:
UVA is the major portion of UV radiation (90-95%). It is low in energy, yet can penetrate the dermis, where they can damage DNA.
UVB is the smaller part of the total UV radiation (about 5%), yet carries a lot of energy. UVB radiation causes immediately visible damage to skin (erythema, sunburn) and can also trigger photocarcinogenesis.
IR (INFRARED) can reach the deep dermis, causing the formation of oxygen free radicals (ROS).

THE EFFECTS OF SUN RADIATION ON SKIN
THE NEW SUN DEFENCE SUN
DEFENCE SUN sunscreens are designed to offer TRIPLE PHOTOPROTECTION
- against short-term damage caused by UVA and UVB rays
- against free radicals generated by IR rays
- against biological damage to DNA
Each product contains:
- Photostable UVA and UVB FILTERS and the SPF BOOSTER, the latter to maximize sun filter effectiveness on skin
- PRO-REPAIR Complex to provide DEFENCE Sunscreens with an adjuvant role in the protection of keratinocytes from the damage of ultraviolet rays and in the prevention of a number of skin cancers and actinic keratoses. The complex strengthens the natural repair ability of skin.

RESPECT FOR SKIN, EVEN THE MOST SENSITIVE
DEFENCE SUN sunscreen products are designed to respect skin, also when sensitive and intolerant, that is, they do not contain substances reported in the dermatological literature as being amongst the most frequent causes of contact allergies - preservatives, fragrances, gluten. In addition, products are also nickel tested.
FREE FROM PRESERVATIVES
Based on regulations established by the European Union, a number of preservatives are deemed safe for use in cosmetics, thus authorised for use (EC Cosmetic Regulation n° 1223/2009 – Annex V).
Nonetheless, the literature reports that, in the case of individual hypersensitivity, a number of preservatives may trigger an allergic skin reaction. The BioNike sunscreens have been developed without traditionally used cosmetic preservatives thanks to a special formulation strategy that is based on keeping free water content in the formula under control, which allows to preserve our products from microbial contamination throughout their shelf life.
FREE FROM FRAGRANCES
According to dermatological literature, fragrances are amongst the most common causes of contact allergy. To minimise the risk of these reactions, the BioNike sunscreens are formulated free from fragrances, which means selecting the ingredients also based on their olfactory characteristics. The choice of going fragrance-free is particularly important in sunscreens, since a number of fragrance components may induce photosensitisation reactions upon sun exposure.
FREE FROM GLUTEN
The scientific literature shows that gluten contained in topical products may trigger forms of skin intolerance and allergic reactions in allergy-prone subjects that have an altered skin barrier or are affected by "non-celiac gluten sensitivity". BioNike selects raw materials to exclude all possible gluten sources.
NICKEL TESTED
Nickel-induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD is the most common form of dermatitis in industrialised countries. In cosmetics, nickel is a technically unavoidable impurity and cannot be completely eliminated. BioNike selects the ingredients and runs checks on every production batch to ensure traces of nickel are reduced to lower than 0.1 ppm (0.00001%), a percentage 10 times lower than the threshold that may trigger allergic reaction.
