The type of packaging we choose to develop and use is based on a number of requirements we need to meet: ensure quality, safety, full preservation of the product, easy-to-use design and superior aesthetics, with the aim to also avoid the waste of resources and materials. We strive every day to improve manufacturing processes and packaging in an effort to save energy and reduce raw materials and polluting emissions.
Our efforts to reduce the impact we have on the environment has led us to implementing the use, as of 2021, of a new eco-packaging, designed to 1) recycle, 2) reuse and 3) reduce as much packaging materials as possible.
Recycle
We have decided to work according to a circular economy model, thus by increasingly using recycled packaging materials for our products. In 2022, this has led to using recycled materials (such as recycled plastic and aluminium) for all our bottles used to make face, body and hair cleansers, sunscreens and body treatments – a policy that, in 2022, has allowed us to reduce the use of virgin materials for product packaging by 54%.
The use of recycled materials has allowed us to reduce total CO2 emissions by 20% and to save 55,000 kg of virgin plastic compared to the previous year.
All our outer boxes are made of recycled or FSC-certified paperboard (Forest Stewardship Council, an organisation that certifies that the paperboard used comes from forests managed according to strict environment-protection, social and economic standards).
By 2025, we aim to further reduce virgin plastic so to reach the result of using 85% recycled materials in our packaging, thereby extending the use of recycled plastics to other packaging components, such as pump dispensers, labels and sleevers, and eventually include packaging for makeup products in this process as well – makeup packaging being the most important challenge when implementing recyclable materials.
Reuse
Whenever possible, we choose to use sustainable and 100% recyclable materials, such as the glass for the pots with our face treatments or the aluminium we use for our Christmas gift sets.
To date, 78% of our packaging is 100% recyclable. The only packaging that we still cannot make in recyclable material are multi-material pump dispensers and tubes, cosmetic pouches, stick cases and multimaterial applicators.
As of 2021, we have decided to make our secondary packaging boxes by using only ecological paper laminates that are completely recyclable, biodegradable and thermoformed in 100% recyclable paper pulp, which has led us to reducing virgin plastic by 4,500 kg, that is, 100% of our plastic consumption in this category.
In 2023, we have set an important milestone in our path to better protect the environment by implementing the new Glam & Green makeup case for all our bronzing powders, blushers, compact foundations and compact eyeshadows, which now come in this unique case whose components are disassemblable, thus can be separated for better waste material recycling.
By 2025, we aim to make 90% of our packaging 100% recyclable. To further increase the recyclability of our products, we are working to develop new technologies that will allow to develop single-material (100% recyclable) tubes, also involving the use of recycled material, and to procure only single-material (100% recyclable) pumps, partially made with recycled materials. In the foreseeable future, we have planned to implement as much recycled material as possible also for makeup packaging, even though this product category is the most challenging in terms of procuring recycled materials.
Reduce
Caring for the environment also involves choosing to reduce the amount of packaging materials used for our products. For instance, when packaging is not needed to adequately protect the product or to communicate important information to the consumer, we decide to offer our products without the secondary packaging box.
In 2021, we decided to stop using cellophane to wrap our products for better protection. This has meant stopping the use of cellophane for this purpose completely and no longer using 1,500 kg of this material, with a 44% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to the previous year.
In 2023, we have decided to eliminate the internal package leaflet from all our face, body, sunscreen and makeup products, thus saving 5,100 kg of paper.
By 2023, we will have eliminated
heat-sleeve packaging from face products, body products and hair washes, which will allow us to save a further 7,000 kg of plastic and reduce CO2 by an additional 26,000 Kg.
As of 2024, we will implement new eco-friendly caps, that is caps for bottles and tubes designed in a manner that reduces the use of plastic by 50%.
By 2025, it is our intention to reduce the amount of plastic used for our bottles, by progressively opting for lower-weight packaging.
