Tour ongoing performance-optimisation process to increase Sustainability is carried out to achieve a major improvement of our overall environmental footprint.
The goal is to combine the necessarily large-scale, high-tech and state-of-the-art production processes with the preservation of natural resources and the protection of the environment.
In recent years, we have undertaken an important energy efficiency project capable of significantly cutting energy expenditure and CO₂ emissions.
The project is based on meeting three objectives: the use of renewable energy, the reduction of waste, keeping our production based in Italy (meaning sourcing materials and goods locally and also supporting made-in-Italy products).
Renewable Energy
Our care for the environment shows clearly in our decision to use only renewable energy to power our systems. In fact, electricity, the major source of energy we use, is made through a system of solar panels installed a few years ago.
The photo-voltaic system serving our production plants and offices has allowed us to reduce CO₂ emissions by 25% and net TOE (Tonnes of Oil Equivalent) consumption by 40%. To date, 30% of the energy we use in our production plants and in our offices comes from solar energy produced thanks to our photo-voltaic system. The remaining 70% of energy is sourced as energy certified to be 100% from renewable sources, that is, from windmills, hydroelectric, solar and biomass power plants (100% Green Energy certification).
As for gas consumption for energy needs, with the installation of a powerful heat pump and thanks also to a heat exchange system that makes use of well water, we have optimised boiler performance for the production of steam and have further reduced use of external energy sources to serve the 65,000 m3 of production plants we have, thereby cutting methane gas consumption by 35%.
Over the next few years, we have set the goal of eliminating gas-based heating systems serving our warehouses where we stock manufacturing materials and finished products, by installing a new heat pump that will allow to cut methane gas consumption by an additional 30%.
Waste Reduction
We strive to reduce our waste as much as possible, which means diminishing the amount of unrecyclable waste generated by manufacturing processes that is disposed of in landfills and increasing as much as possible the amount of waste that is recyclable or unrecyclable but recovered to create heat and electricity through waste-to-energy plants. In 2021, the share of recoverable waste generated by manufacturing processes has been over 80% and we are working to further increase waste recovery in the next years.
